CNN Campbell Brown Comments about Muslims and Islam

General News

Asalamu 'alaikum warahmatuallah,

On October 13, 2008, Campbell Brown, one of the major anchors for CNN, made an unbelievable breakthrough in mainstream media. This was an extremely courageous act on her part and it was the first time I had heard anyone in American media talk about Islam and Muslims like this. Here is the link to the segment of what she said:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LXMMmfd1lw

if the link does not work, simply go to YouTube and type in "Cambell Brown Arab" in the search box and it should be the first video on the top of the list.

Please, if we as proud American Muslims always condemn any negative talk about our beloved religion, WE MUST praise and commend those that speak good, ESPECIALLY on American television. Please take two minutes of your time to email Cambell Brown by commenting on her very courageous words and expressing your appreciation and gratitude. Here is the link that will take you straight to the e-mail center:

Jazakumallahukhair and May Allah reward you for your time and efforts (ameen).

Muslim leader Warith Deen Mohammed dies

General News

Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, a major Islamic leader in the U.S. who led thousands of African-American Muslims to orthodox Islam, died today in Illinois, according to local Muslims and his nephew. He was 74.

Born and raised in Hamtramck, Mohammed, also known as Imam W.D. Mohammed, was the son of Nation of Islam leader and Michigan native Elijah Muhammad. After his father’s death, Mohammed transformed the Nation from a black nationalist organization into a group that embraced a more mainstream Islam that rejected racial and ethnic divisions.

He was considered to be the biggest Muslim leader in the U.S. among African-Americans and probably had more followers than any other Muslim leader in the U.S., say Muslims.

Men speak out against rise in domestic abuse

General News

By ROB PEREZ
Advertiser Staff Writer

In the struggle to curb domestic abuse, a handful of men sounded the alarm yesterday.

Spurred to action by nine deaths over the past year, the religious leaders, nonprofit executives, politicians, community activists and others pledged to support efforts to end a vicious cycle of violence against Hawai'i's women and children and to be positive role models and mentors.

Standing outside the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Downtown, they encouraged other men to join them in speaking out against the violence that so far this year has claimed the lives of a 7-year-old boy and his mother in Mililani, the mother of four children in 'Ewa Beach, an 'Aiea mom of an 18-year-old teen, a mother of five who was beaten to death on a Kailua street and a Kalihi woman who was stabbed with a kitchen knife at her apartment. In the Mililani, 'Ewa Beach and 'Aiea cases, police said the husbands committed the killings, then took their own lives.

Domestic Violence March

General News

By Jai Cunningham

About two dozen men are hoping to lead by example, letting other men and boys know that domestic violence is unacceptable.

"I'm even tempted to call it war against domestic violence, and we need to declare that, and we need to fight it,' says Raymund Liongson, Leeward Community College Professor.

And every man is welcome to enlist in this fight.

"And we are so happy that members of the Muslim community, members of the protestant community are here, members of the catholic and other christian charities are here," says Joe Bloom, Catholic Charities Hawaii.

Keith Ellison looks at the QuranLarge majority in House of Representatives backs measure

By Lea Terhune
USINFO Staff Writer

Washington – A resolution recognizing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and expressing the "deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world" was adopted in the U.S. House of Representatives October 2 by a vote of 376-0.

The resolution acknowledging the importance of Muslims in America, the first of its kind, was introduced by Texas Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson and co-sponsored by 30 legislators, including Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota.  Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress.

"It’s a sign of respect and recognition. It’s a very American thing to do. We are a nation of religious tolerance and religious inclusion," Ellison told USINFO.

"The basic idea is to demonstrate not only to the Muslim world but to the whole world that the U.S. Congress is a place where all faiths are respected, all faiths are recognized, where we embrace our diversity and where we believe that the promise of America is that you may seek the Divine as you see fit within your own judgment, and in your own tradition and in your own way," he said.
