U.S. has moral responsibility as superpower

Islam around the worldMany expect injustice from an invading vengeful state that not only continued to occupy Palestine and parts of South Lebanon but also has been violating Lebanese sovereignty by air, sea and land. A state that has been waging a full-fledged war against defenseless population killing scores of civilian men, women and children.
I make a clear distinction between Jews and the State of Israel. I, along with millions of Muslims have no issues with Jews, as evident in the fact that tens of thousand Jews live in Muslim countries in peace and tranquility. It is also evident in the fact that thousands of Jews are opposed to the ongoing massacre of innocent Palestinians and Lebanese. Further, my Jewish friends know what I stand for, and I have publicly denounced the killing of civilians who are Jews and I will speak up when Muslims are affected as well.

When a society accepts the killing of innocent civilians, including women, children, elderly and the disabled, in retaliation for individual acts, then we have lost our morals and the very basic consciousness that makes us humans. We know that the United Nations, the European Union and almost every country except for the U.S. have termed the ongoing aggression as "disproportionate," "excessive" and "pointless." What this administration did instead was to veto a resolution that called on Israel to end the bombing and to rush a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel as reported by The New York Times.

Israel has demonstrated through violent actions that it is attacking civilian targets in Lebanon to achieve a political goal. This is the very definition of state sanctioned terrorism. Producing a humanitarian crisis of massive proportions, bombing the area's only power plant, causing hospitals to only take emergency cases, causing ordinary civilians to sell everything they own just to buy scarce food supplies, destroying bridges and residential neighborhoods aren't all these acts considered terrorism?

The uppermost duty of any U.S. president is to protect the lives of Americans, therefore I wonder why our government has adopted an unjust, one-sided policy and has sided with Israel, which in turn put us citizens in increased danger and isolation from the rest of the world, endangers the safety of our troops in Iraq and offers the best recruitment for extremists who thrive on such actions. Is the Israeli lobby that powerful?

America's image and interests worldwide are being harmed by its unbalanced Middle East foreign policy, one that is driven by Israeli interests and not American interests. The American thing to do is to stand with the frail and the oppressed and not the invading force and its military that is clearly engaging in acts of terrorism.

Our nation cannot maintain credibility in condemning acts of terror carried out by individuals or groups while offering diplomatic cover and material support to a state that is engaged in a brutal campaign against an entire civilian population. Of course, kidnapping three soldiers is wrong, but that does not give them the right to retaliate by bombing infrastructure and civilians. All this to keep a land that was illegally occupied, ignoring countless U.N. resolutions.

The moderates we're trying to win over are seeing American-made bombs falling by the dozens on innocent people. Many expect injustice from an invading vengeful state that not only continued to occupy Palestine and parts of South Lebanon but also has been violating Lebanese sovereignty by air, sea and land. A state that has been waging a full-fledged war against defenseless population killing scores of civilian men, women and children.

However, no one expects it from America, a country that prides itself in helping the weak and stopping injustices. The U.S. should demand a ceasefire and immediate stop to the ongoing acts to terror. After all, Israel owes us at least that for the billions of our taxes that our government pays them each year.

It is important that we don't allow Israeli propaganda to present an image of balance between the two sides: There is no equilibrium between the two sides in this conflict. Not only in terms of Israeli military superiority, but also in terms of massive killings by Israel of largely innocent civilians. In the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, this Israeli aggression will go down as a watershed; it will have an impact on the course of the conflict and also on the stability of the very regimes that the U.S. spends money and weapons to prop up.

Now that we reached a human catastrophe in Palestine and Lebanon, isn't it time for America to take a moral stand toward the Palestinian and Lebanese people, put an end to the Palestinian suffering and bear its responsibility as a world superpower? I love this country, and it is because of this love that I want our country to do better. To those who God has given much, much is expected. Our country has been truly blessed this blessing comes with great responsibility.

Forget what religion you practice and what country you belong to. Let's look at this as a human issue. Wouldn't you want justice to be done and your family to be safe? Wouldn't you want to have food and shelter and not be forced to become a refugee? And wouldn't you want to be able to you take your children to the hospital when they're sick? I'm certain you would, and so do the Palestinian and the Lebanese people. They feel the same way about their families and homes. They bleed the same way we do.

I do not believe the Israelis should be killing innocent civilians. I also find it hard to believe that so many people are so ignorant to believe the war is Israel's fault. The Israelis are trying to remove the terrorist group hezbollah from Lebanon because hezbollah has been indiscriminantly launching missles into Israel and killing innocent civilians. They hide behind innocents thus it is their fault the innocents are getting killed. Hezbollah's "precision strikes" are against non-military targets. Everyone should demand that hezbollah stop provoking Israel with these missile attacks. When will hezbollah members become true MEN and fight their opponents face to face without hiding behind the women and the children?

First of all Hakim Ouansafi, the USA is not your country nor will it ever be. America is not a tool to protect your special interest in a foriegn land, do you honestly believe Israel is protected by the USA because it's moraly right? If there was no oil in the midle east the Arab world would be another Central Africa. If the people in the Arab world truely wanted peace they would either stop fighting or all get together and run the Israelis out once and for all.

In the end, there was a war, the Israelis won and the world hasn't been safe since. Who's to blame? I don't really care but I can tell you this the Jews in America are not a threat to my family and our way of life, the religion of Islam is.

Your religion preaches and breeds hate, Islam is no diferent than the KKK. You write about peace but refuse to recognize Israel, this promotes hate. It's a state, it's real, look at a map. Are you scared to admit that Israel has a right to exist? Would that make you a sell out? A bad Muslim?

Stop putting so much effort into writing drivel on what America should do and direct it towards terrorists. Until The Nation of Islam takes a stand by protesting bombers that kill their own people the way they do for a cartoon they don't like there will never be peace for anyone.

Shat, I believe you should really examine your own statement. You accuse Hakim of not belonging to this country and trying to usurp this country for his own special interest, yet you fail to see how this country has already been usurped for the special interest of others.

It also sounds like that you have declared war on the religion of Islam. This is a statement that holds incredible circumstances. Not only does it put you and others who are like minded into a mindset that is narrow minded, but it also induces reactions by similair narrow minded people on the other side of the fence that are detrimental to our mutual safety, security and most importantly, liberties.

Your statements regarding Islam breeding and preaching hate is one that has become a mantra of those who have declared war on Islam. It is not one that rests in truth but instead is part of the propaganda mechanism for those who are trying to reshape the demographics of this world. In essence, what you despice so much about certain people who call themselves Muslims, you are doing yourself. You should join the rest of us Muslims and help us to help you. If you fight us, we will not be in a position to fight the negative elements who identify themselves with us.

In other words, we cannot fight off our own cancers if we are forced to deal with yours first.

Of course, you bring up Israel's right to exist. You also leave out Palestine's right to exist and Lebanon's right to sovereignty. You fail to recognize that a sovereign nation that was not at war at all with Israel was attacked. Innocent civilians were murdered. You also fail to recognize that this is not a historical first. Israel has also done this in the past to Lebanon and its other neighbors, all under the guise of protecting its right to exist.

You also mention that all the Arab/Muslims neighbors should just unite and take over Israel if they really want that as a goal. That one statement should answer your own question. If they really wanted that, then they really would have done that. Since they have not done that, than you must conclude that they really do not want that. What they do want indeed is justice and peace for the Palestinian people and all that surround Israel.

The Nation of Islam is a group that is not affiliated with Mainstream Islam. It is a deviant group whose teachings are considered heresy for Muslims. They teach something completely different. So your reference to the Nation of Islam is irrelevant and misplaced. It only serves to demonstrate your ignorance of Islam and Muslims.

You should also read and consider that the reaction of the Muslims regarding the cartoon was not really far different than people reacting to Mel Gibsons movie and many other media productions. In this country, there are many things not printed, said, or produced due to fear of uprisals. Be honest for a moment and think about it. Would anyone in America blast Jesus and get away with it? I think not. So please be rational just as much as you and I wish that those who protested were more rational in their reactions.

And last but not least, there can be no peace, until you extend your hand in peace. If you are Christian, than you should be reminded of Jesus words on the Sermon of the Mount:

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you." (Matthew 5:38-42, NIV)

A parallel version is offered in the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke:

"But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,"

"Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." (Luke 6:28-31. King James Version)

I should say to you that Islam has similair teachings:

"Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with that is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! (The Noble Quran, 41:34)"

"Twice will they be given their reward, for that they have persevered, that they avert evil with good, and that they spend (in charity) out of what We have given them. (The Noble Quran, 28:54)"

"But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in God: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things). (The Noble Quran, 8:61)"
