Hawaii Muslims Condemn Treasonous Act
-- MEDIA ADVISORY --
Hawaii Muslims strongly condemn the cowardly act of treason committed against our American Soldiers in Kuwait.
War is a terrible and evil thing, dreadful and immoral things do happen, civilian brothers and sisters from all faiths die, our military American brothers and sister die, in fighting, friendly fire or murdered as it was the case in Kuwait. This senseless loss of life is not acceptable in Islam and it is precisely the reason that we strongly oppose any offensive war.
Our prayers, compassion and sympathy go out to their families and loved one and as Americans, Muslims and human beings we grieve with them and we pray for them. We also pray for the quick, immediate and safe return of our young men and women that are in harm’s way and for the safety of all innocent Iraqi civilians.
The alleged act of Sgt. Asan Akbar is an act of treason and a cowardly act. We condemn and denounce such un-Islamic acts in the strongest possible terms. We very much agree with the Army General’s statement as well as the installation Chaplain at Fort Campbell, Doug McLeroy, that this is an isolated, individual act and not an expression of faith.
Islam is very clear that once you make an oath to serve, you are to fulfill your commitments and follow orders of the commander in chief even if you disagree with the orders. However, if a soldier has any doubt that he/ she will fully fulfill their oath; they must get out prior to any conflict under “Conscientious objector” act. Acts of treachery and murder are completely and categorically forbidden in Islam even against your worst enemies. This soldier should be subjected to a military court of justice and must now bear the consequences of his seditious act if he is found guilty of committing this crime.
This individual act is in no way a reflection of other Muslims in the Military. In Fort Campbell alone, there are dozens of Muslim soldiers and thousands in the American Military. This is clearly an isolated case and no one should doubt the vigor commitment and loyalty of the couple thousands Muslim soldiers that are currently committing the ultimate sacrifice and risking their lives by fighting for our country.
Finally, we caution against exploiting this incident and making sweeping generalizations about others of the same race, ethnicity, or religion of the suspect. We have confidence in the great majority of Americans and law enforcement agencies and we believe that together we will prevent wicked opportunists and ignorant fanatics from using any situation as an excuse to commit hate crimes.
